Hundreds of people turned out to hear Dr. Lance Price speak at JFAN's Annual Meeting, Factory Farms Are Creating Superbugs: How We Can Save Lifesaving Antibiotics - and Ourselves, on October 24, 2019 at the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center in Fairfield.
Dr. Price, the Founding Director of the Antibiotic Resistance Action Center and a professor at the Milken Institute of Public Health at George Washington University, gave an eye opening yet engaging talk on how antibiotic resistance occurs and how factory farms are generating antibiotic-resistance bacteria, commonly called "superbugs."
He was preceded by Lois Dovico, the owner of Dovico Gardens and Greenhouses, who shared her story about contracting necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating Staph infection, which later returned along along with the superbug MRSA. Dovico got the infection from well water contaminated with CAFO manure that splashed on a foot wound while she was watering plants in her greenhouse.
JFAN board member and emcee Dr. John Ikerd, Professor Emeritus at the University of Missouri at Columbia, kicked off the meeting with a presentation on the failure of governance to protect its citizens. JFAN President and Executive Director Diane Rosenberg honed in on the public health threats of CAFOs and the progress being made addressing the harms of factory farming. The chart demonstrating JFAN's effectiveness in protecting Jefferson County was highlighted by JFAN board member Dean Draznin who spoke on the importance of JFAN to the county's quality of life.
