The EATS Act, now reintroduced as the Food Security and Farm Protection Act (S. 1326), is a dangerous bill reintroduced in the US Senate by Senator Joni Ernst and co-sponsored by Senator Chuck Grassley.

This bill is identical to the language of the EATS Act introduced in the previous Congress. If passed, the bill would roll back progress on animal welfare, allowing hogs to suffer in gestation crates.*

It also would prohibit any state from having an agricultural law more stringent than another’s. The weakest laws in the nation would become the national standard.

Here are things you can do to help stop this draconian bill:

1. CALL: Make three calls to the US Capitol Switchboard at 407-573-7426, ask to speak with your senators or representative, and simply say:

“Hi, my name is ____ and I’m a constituent from (your town/city). I’m concerned about animal welfare and agricultural safety, and I am calling to ask my US Representative/Senator to OPPOSE the dangerous EATS Act, recently reintroduced as S. 1326. I also ask them to OPPOSE any similar legislation or attempts to undo animal protection laws. Thank you.”

Yes, even send this to Senators Ernst and Grassley and all Iowa’s Congress members who supported this bill previously. They need to know their position is unpopular.

2. EMAIL: Send an email to your member of Congress at https://secure.aspca.org/action/fsfp-act#letter

3. SHARE: JFAN’s Facebook post to your social media pages.

Thank you for taking action to defeat the EATS Act!

Note – this is the first of two important action alerts from JFAN this week. Stay tuned for the next action alert on anaerobic digesters coming later this week.

* The EATS Act was introduced to nullify California Proposition 12 which prohibited the sale of pork from hogs in gestation crates from being sold in only that state.
