Dr. Chris Jones gives us a lot to consider in The Swine Republic: Struggles with the Truth about Agriculture and Water Quality, his compilation of essays on water quality, agriculture, and the state’s refusal to meaningfully address the reasons behind Iowa’s water pollution issues.
Jones returns to Fairfield on Tuesday, June 27 for a book club meeting on The Swine Republic. This opportunity is geared for those who have read the book, or parts of it, where we’ll have an opportunity to discuss Jones' essays, ask questions, and share our thoughts, ideas and perspectives with him and others.
The Swine Republic compiles many of the essays Jones penned for his former, popular University of Iowa blog. The blog was taken down and Jones abruptly retired from his position at IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering after Senators Dan Zumbach and Tom Shipley leveled an implied threat to University of Iowa funding if the blog remained online.
This is a must-read book.
Want to participate in the book club, but haven’t read the book yet? You can order it from Ice Cube Press or Amazon.
Jones was a former research engineer at IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering at the University and manager of the Iowa Water Quality Information System, a series of nearly 70 water monitors providing real time data on Iowa’s waterbodies. Jones’ new blog is now on Substack.

Join us on June 27 for a thought-provoking book club discussion with Chris Jones on The Swine Republic!
The meeting is organized by Jefferson County Farmers & Neighbors, Inc. and the Southeast Iowa Sierra Club.
