Every five years the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reviews the rules that enforce factory farming laws. A review is currently underway and the public is asked to comment on DNR revisions. This means we have an opportunity to weigh in and urge the agency to strengthen how factory farm laws are enforced.

You can do this in two ways:

1. Send a message via the Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action Alert

2. Attend a public hearing in one of six locations around the state. Click here for locations. In Southeast Iowa, a public hearing will be held in Ainsworth on Tuesday, May 31 at 10:00 am.

JFAN, along with a coalition of 20+ other organizations, are recommending the DNR strengthen 11 rules currently on the books. You can read all the coalition recommendation to the 11 rule changes here.

TALKING POINTS: Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement prepared talking points on each of the recommended rule changes that you can read here.

The JFAN especially advocates the DNR closes the LLC loophole. We provide some information here that you can use in your comments.

However, keep in mind that strengthening the rules is an important first step but it doesn’t go far enough to make a significant difference in the quality of life of Iowa residents. JFAN and our coalition members also call for a moratorium on new and expanding factory farms. We encourage you to do so, too, in your comments.

Let’s all work together to call for a statewide factory farming moratorium beginning with this rule making review!
